On the onset, it seemed as if Resident Evil: Resistance would be a spin-off that tied in with the rest of the series, but as it turns out, that couldn’t be further from the truth despite the fact that it’s bundled in with Resident Evil 3 Remake.
Word comes directly from Resident Evil 3 producer, Peter Fabiano, who told Official PlayStation Magazine that Resistance follows a different timeline.
[Resident Evil: Resistance is] basically set in Raccoon City with scenarios that make it impossible to fit in the actual timeline [with] familiar enemies and characters like Mastermind.]
This is part of the reason why Capcom has decided to package Resistance together with Resident Evil 3. The connection between the two games is purely thematic. In the same interview, Fabiano continued:
You’ll remember that the Japanese subtitle for RE3 was Last Escape. Both of these titles have characters that are trying to escape somewhere or something, so thematically it made sense. We also wanted to take up the challenge of building out an online game set in the RE universe.
So, while the game looks like it will be an interesting spin-off, it won’t be tied into the rest of the series outside of the general theme and, well, Racoon City. Both games launch on April 3, so stay tuned for updates.
