Less than two weeks ago, Sony launched a dedicated PS5 pre-order registration page, which wasn’t for pre-ordering but to put your name into a pool to be considered worthy of pre-ordering the PS5 and a limited number of each accessory. Now, a new rumor suggests that pre-orders could open as soon as September 9th, 2020, but is there any truth to the rumor or is it just vaporware?
The rumor that the PS5 will move into pre-order status on September 9th comes courtest of @IronManPS5 on Twitter. And, that’s part of the reason why this rumor isn’t all that believable. He has accurately leaked (or predicted) some things in the past, but he’s also made a fair number of mistakes as well. With the pro-order opening date being just two days away from now, you’d think Sony would have confirmed the date, but there’s still zero confirmation from Sony or PlayStation.
Add in the fact that Sony has asked people to register interest in pre-ordering, all of which will be thrown into a pool and chosen at random, and a normal pre-order date this soon doesn’t make a lot of sense. Sony will not just open pre-orders to the world if it really does have to limit launch-day stock. At the same time, there are a couple of things that make this rumor at least somewhat believable.
The first big reason (yet, also a reason why someone would blindly predict such a pre-order date) is that September 9th marks the 25th anniversary of the original PlayStation console’s launch. The other thing to take into consideration is that Sony has promised that the PS5 will launch on time for the holiday 2020 season, so pre-orders should be kicking off sometime in the near future. The Xbox Series X is expected to launch in early November (some rumors indicate Nov. 6), so this might actually give Sony a small jump on the competition Plus, early November is right in line with when the PS3 and PS4 launched, so September pre-ordering does make a lot of sense.
For now, we just have to wait and see what happens, and we’ll know soon enough since the alleged pre-order date is drawing near. If it doesn’t happen by the end of this week, we’ll probably hear from Sony by the end of the month or mid-October at the earliest.
