It seems like news about the potential for sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn has just recently started circulating, but in a matter of just a few months, we’ve learned a lot. Not only is it limited to next-gen consoles but between reports that it would be a PS5 exclusive and the job listing that backed that report up, we’re pretty sure is bound only for the PS5 with some potential to make it to PC some point in the future. That said, we have a lot more to talk about than that, and this guide will get you up to speed with everything that you need to know.
Horizon Zero Dawn 2 Is Actually Horizon Forbidden West
For the past few months, everyone has been calling the game Horizon Zero Dawn 2, but now that the official trailer above has been released, we know that the game will officially go by Horizon 2 Forbidden West. That name, by the way, holds a little more meaning than you might think, as you’ll find out a little further down the page.
Horizon 2 Forbidden West Description
Information for Horizon 2 Forbidden West is limited this early on, but we do know that it follows Aloy’s story sometime after the events that unfolded in Horizon Zero Dawn. This time around, however, she’s heading west – hence the Forbidden West name – where she’ll be take on “awe-inspiring machines” and face new, mysterious threats. As of now, Horizon 2 Forbidden West is expected to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
When Does Horizon 2 Forbidden West Take Place?
Guerrilla Games hasn’t been too forthcoming with details just yet, but in the trailer Aloy claims that it has been a thousand years since the Old Ones fell. By “Old Ones”, she means the bulk of the human race. If you’ve played through Horizon Zero Dawn, you know that it was set around the year 3040, which was nearly 1,000 years after humanity fell, and that happened in 2066. So, the general consensus is that Horizon 2 Forbidden West takes place some 26 years after HZD – something that would but Aloy in her 40s. Of course, you should probably take this with a grain of salt as none of the official screenshots or the trailer show Aloy looking like a 40-year-old woman. Then again, maybe she aged gracefully.
Does Horizon 2 Forbidden West Have a New Map?
While there’s a possibility that we might see a few familiar places or landmarks in the beginning, we know for sure that Forbidden West will focus on a whole new area of the world that we haven’t seen before. Aloy is “moving west to a far-future America” where we’ll encounter new terrain and new enemies. You can get a peak of the terrain in the trailer and it looks downright gorgeous, albeit deadly. We know that there will be some underwater exploration too, so it seems as if the function part of the world we can explore will be larger than before, however, that has yet to be confirmed. Most of what we see, however, will be all-new, so it should make for a great experience.
Horizon 2 Forbidden West Will Have Plenty of New Enemies
While Forbidden West’s map and explorable area will be largely new, we will see some familiar enemies. While they weren’t shown off in the trailer, I certainly wouldn’t write off the robotic dinos from HZD, and we can say for sure that the Scrapper and the Snapmaw will be back for more action. That said, we will also get to take on some new elephant-like creature, and we did spot a giant turtle and a handful of new flying creatures too. The game’s official description says that Aloy will face “awe-inspiring machines and mysterious new threats,” so don’t even start to think that this is a full and complete list of new enemies or machines.
Considering Forbidden West appears to be some 26 years after the events of HZD, it looks like Aloy hasn’t changed much. And, I’m not just talking about how little she appears to have aged. As best we can tell, she’s still rocking out that old-school tech like the bow and arrow. It also seems as if Sylens is making a comeback too, something we’ve expected based on the ending of HZD. What Sylens is up to is a different story, and we’ll have to wait until we learn more, but it’s been made painfully clear that he has planes with HADES.
When Will Horizon 2 Forbidden West Be Released and For What Systems?
Horizon 2 Forbidden West is officially listed as a PlayStation exclusive, so for the foreseeable future, you should expect to find it available for the PS5. What’s unclear is whether or not it’ll be available for the PS4. Since HZD did eventually land on PC, there’s a good chance that Forbidden West will follow the same path, but I wouldn’t expect it to happen for at least a year or two after it launches for the PlayStation. As of now, Horizon 2 Forbidden West is expected to launch sometime in 2021, however, some sources are listing it as a 2020 game, which could hint at a rush to have it ready for the PS5’s launch for the holiday season of 2020.
