Buy Cyberpunk 2077 At Launch, Play on Xbox Series X Later

There’s no real need to wait to buy the game, now is there?

Over the next 8 or 9 months, you’re going to have to put a little more thought into whether or not you want to buy new games when they launch. After all, the Xbox Series X and PS5 will be launching for the holidays, so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to buy a new game, just to purchase it for the next-gen console a few months later. Well, with Cyberpunk 2077, that won’t be an issue.

Shortly after the official Xbox Twitter account posted news that the Xbox Series X would support backward compatibility across four generations, CD Porjekt Red took action too. Posting via the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account, the developer has confirmed that any Xbox One owner that buys Cyberpunk 2077 will be able to play on the Xbox Series X for free when it is available. Of course, the current-gen verion of Cyberpunk 2077 won’t launch until September, so who knows what “when it is available” really means.

Will Cyberpunk 2077 Be Ported Over to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5?

Now what “Xbox Series X upgrade” means is a bit of a mystery. Will Cyberpunk 2077 be completely ported over to Xbox Series X with the updated graphics, sound, and all the trimmings? Or, will it simply be playable as part of Microsoft’s backward compatibility promise? Furthermore, will CD Project Red keep with its promise across the board and make the same promise for PS4\PS5 owners?

The simple fact that this statement was only made via a retweet of Microsoft’s backward compatibility promise, with no mention of Sony consoles, hints that the promise means it’ll be available on Xbox Series X via backward compatibility. CD Projekt Red can’t make the same promise for Sony yet as there’s no official word on backward compatibility for the PS5 console.

Stay tuned – we’ll keep you apprised as more updates become available.
