A New Tweet from the Long-Dormant Mafia Games Twitter Hints At Something

Will there be a new Mafia game, or a remaster of something a bit older?

The official Twitter account of the Mafia Series (@Mafiagame) has been dormant since August 2018, but it spring back to life briefly on Mother’s Day to tweet a single word: “Family.” While speculation for what the tweet means runs high and low across the internet, there’s no official comment or understanding of what the tweet actually means.

Rumors are saying that tweet indicates that there’s a new game in the series that’s about to be announced. Others are saying the tweet represents impending word that the original game – the one from way back in 2002 – is about the be remastered. In all honesty, though, it’s more likely that we’ll see a remaster of Mafia 2 or Mafia 3, both of which popped up briefly on the ratings boards in Korea and Taiwan earlier in 2020.

At the same time, Hangar 13 – the studio responsible for Mafia 3 – laid off a significant portion of its staff back in 2018. Owner of that studio, 2K Games, made an announcement that said the layoff was “to ensure that the studio’s resources are properly aligned with its long-term development plans.” The same rep also said, “These reductions will not influence 2K’s ability to create and deliver its products that are currently in development. We never take these matters lightly, and are working with the affected employees to support them and explore potential opportunities throughout our organization.”

In other words, 2K games didn’t want to keep floating the whole bill required to keep studio staff on board. But, that doesn’t mean that a remaster of one or more of the games from the Mafia Series won’t suddenly pop up around the same time the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 launch later this year. After all, the would be perfect timing, don’t you think?
